Pregnant? Are you looking for abortion information? Whether this is your first time or fourth time, we are here to help you.
What should you know?
Not all abortions are the same. The type of abortion depends on the gestational age of your pregnancy. How do you find that out? Keep reading, but for now, let’s look at what an abortion entails.
How does it work?
Medical: a medical abortion consists of two pills that end your pregnancy. One pill will stop the pregnancy from growing. The second will cause your uterus to expel the pregnancy tissue.
Surgical: a surgical abortion requires a doctor using medical instruments and a suction to remove the pregnancy from your uterus.
How long does it take?
Medical: Your appointment could take a few hours. You will be given two pills for two different medicines, which are taken up to two days apart.
Depending on the clinic, you may take both of the medicines at home, or you may take one or both of them at an abortion clinic. In most cases, the abortion is over within 24 hours after taking the second set of pills.
You’ll have a follow-up visit or phone call to make sure the pills worked. These follow-up appointments are imperative to your health. If the abortion was not successful, you need to know so that no infection sets in.
Surgical: A surgical abortion procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. However, it’s not uncommon for you to be at your appointment for a few hours. In addition, some state laws will require a separate pre-abortion visit. Keep in mind, abortions later in pregnancy may take longer and require more visits.
Where can I make a pre-abortion visit?
At Pregnancy Help NYC, we offer Pre-Abortion Counseling, a prerequisite for abortion in many states. At this appointment, we will need to confirm your pregnancy, not only with a high-quality pregnancy test but also with an ultrasound.
Because if you’re miscarrying, you won’t need an abortion, and an ultrasound can determine this for you. You will also need to know how far along you are in your pregnancy. Only an ultrasound exam can accurately determine gestational age.
If you’re considering a surgical abortion, we strongly encourage STI testing and treatment. Testing and treatment before an abortion are imperative as not to exacerbate the infection(s).
Although we do not refer or provide abortions, we can help you get the help and information you need to make an informed choice.
